Eric Stolz was cast as Marty McFly after Michael J. Fox was originally unavailable. Shortly after shooting began, director Robert Zemeckis determined that Stoltz was not right for the part. Four million dollars was added to the budget, Fox was ultimately hired, and initial scenes were re-filmed.
Eric Stoltz is actually still in the film—sort of. Shots of him in the DeLorean when Marty is being chased by the Libyans in the mall parking lot are still in the final cut of the film.
