Baseball: America's Favorite Pastime

Following the Washington Nationals World Series appearance and subsequent victory in 2019, the Seattle Mariners are now the only Major League franchise to never appear in a World Series.

The current Washington Nationals franchise was founded in 1969 as the Montreal Expos as part of a four-team expansion. After a failed contraction plan, the Expos were purchased by MLB, which sought to relocate the team to a new city. Washington, D.C. was chosen in 2004, and the Nationals were established in 2005.

Babe Ruth wore the No. 3 jersey for fifteen seasons with the New York Yankees. His jersey number, along with every jersey number between 1 and 10, has been retired by the team.

Ernie Harwell was a broadcaster for fifty-five Major League seasons, forty-two of them as the voice of the Detroit Tigers.

Each baseball fielding position has an associated number for use in scorekeeping: 

1 (pitcher), 2 (catcher), 3 (first baseman), 4 (second baseman), 5 (third baseman), 6 (shortstop), 7 (left fielder) 8 (center fielder), and 9 (right fielder). On a double play, if the ball is picked up by the shortstop, thrown to second, and then thrown to first, the official scorecard would read 6-4-3.
