Box-Office Bombs

"Ishtar" (1987), written and directed by Elaine May, follows the exploits of two inept songwriters as they travel to Morocco and get caught up in an international Cold War incident. The film is estimated to have lost $40 million dollars and is May's last film as a director.

 Renny Harlin and fellow director Michael Bay share the record for most nominations for Razzie Award for Worst Director with six apiece. Bay has won the "award" twice, and Harlin has only ever been nominated.

Future Oscar winner Susan Sarandon plays Janet Weiss in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975), which found belated success as an interactive cult classic, playing to audiences who dance and sing (and throw food) along with the movie. The film has been in continuous release for decades and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2005.

The Edgar Rice Burroughs novel "A Princess of Mars" was adapted to screen with the title "John Carter" in an effort to broaden audience appeal. With an estimated cost of $350 million, the film's worldwide box office was only $284 million, and plans for the sequels were immediately scrapped.

A masked Armie Hammer plays the title role in the 2013 flop "The Lone Ranger," with Johnny Depp problematically cast as the Native American Tonto. 

The film is not without its proponents, however, with Oscar winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino calling it one of the ten best movies of 2013.
