#CincoDeMayo: All Things Mexico!

Though more popularly observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican culture, Cinco de Mayo originally commemorates the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.

On The Day of the Dead, families visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and decorate their graves with altars, which often include orange Mexican marigolds.

These flowers are thought to attract souls of the dead to the offerings. It is also believed the bright petals with a strong scent can guide the souls from cemeteries to their family homes.

The original and traditional piñata has seven points symbolizing the seven deadly sins: envy, sloth, gluttony, greed, lust, wrath, and pride. A ten pointed piñata symbolizes the sins that come from breaking the Ten Commandments.

The stick which is used to break the piñata represents love. It is supposed to destroy the sins by hitting and breaking the pinata into pieces. The candies and treats that come from a broken piñata symbolize the forgiveness of sins and a new beginning.

El pescador translates to "the fisherman" in English. 

Guadalajara is a metropolis in western Mexico and the capital of the state of Jalisco. According to the 2020 census, the city itself has a population of 1,385,629, while the Guadalajara metropolitan area has a population of 5,268,642, making it the third-largest metropolitan area in the country.
