Rio de Janeiro, known as "Cidade Maravilhosa" or "Marvelous City", is one of Brazil's most iconic cities. It was mistakenly named "January River" by Portuguese explorers who arrived on January 1, 1502, thinking they had found the mouth of a large river. 

Observed on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King Dr. Day is a United States federal holiday celebrating the influential civil rights leader. The holiday was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, and Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
