Food Origins

Sushi, as we know it today, was developed in Japan. Initially conceived around the 8th century, it underwent transformations before arriving at the modern sushi, with raw fish over rice emerging in the Edo period (1603-1868).

The fast-food favorite, the Hamburger, can be traced back to Hamburg, Germany. Sailors from this port city were among the first to introduce America to the concept of ground beef patties, known as "Hamburg steaks." When immigrants later adapted this dish to be placed inside a bun, the classic hamburger was born, revolutionizing American fast food.

Belgium is often credited as the true birthplace of fries, even if the term "French fries" suggests otherwise. The confusion stems from the widespread belief that American soldiers stationed in Belgium during World War I named them "French fries" because the Belgian army primarily spoke French. Belgium and France both proudly claim the origins of this delicious side dish.

The story of the Ethiopian goatherd, Kaldi, dates back to the 9th century. Kaldi observed that his goats became energetic and wouldn't sleep at night after consuming the berries from the coffee plant. This legendary tale is credited with the discovery of coffee.

Dijon, a city in the Burgundy region of France, is commonly regarded as the birthplace of the modern mustard we know today. During the Middle Ages, Dijon mustard became famous throughout Europe due to its unique flavor, often traditionally crafted with brown or black mustard seeds mixed with unfermented wine juice, known as "verjuice".
