Independence Day: American Inventions

The telephone, patented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876, revolutionized by enabling coherent voice transmission across signaling distances. Although Bell is widely known for this invention, he wasn't the only inventor in this race; Elisha Gray applied for a patent for a similar design on the very same day. It's said that Bell successfully patented a working model first and won subsequent legal battles defending his priority as the inventor.

Industrialist Henry Ford founded and incorporated the Ford Motor Company in 1903, and the classic Model T was introduced in 1908. The Model T revolutionized the automotive industry by being the first car that was affordable for most Americans, using the assembly line production method. 

Benjamin Franklin is famously credited with proving that lightning is a form of electricity through his kite experiment in 1752. Although the story has taken on mythic proportions, the general idea is that Franklin flew a kite during a thunderstorm, using a key tied to the string to extract electrical charge from the storm clouds.

The ambient electricity both raised the fibers on the kite string and created sparks in a connected jar.

Orville and Wilbur Wright, commonly known as the Wright brothers, are famous for making history with their first powered flight over Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903. They designed, built, and flew the aircraft, called the Wright Flyer, which traveled 120 feet and stayed aloft for twelve seconds. 

Eli Whitney is best known for inventing the cotton gin in 1793, a revolutionary device for separating cotton fibers from their seeds. This invention had a significant impact on the cotton industry in the United States, drastically increasing the amount of cotton that could be processed in a given time.
