"The Dirt" was first published in 2001 and became a New York Times bestseller. The book inspired the band's 2008 album "Saints of Los Angeles" and served as the basis for the 2019 Netflix film also titled "The Dirt."

Diagnosed with a chronic form of arthritis that has plagued him for his entire adult life, Mick Mars has become increasingly disabled over the years. In response, the band announced its farewell tour in 2015, but that was short-lived. Ultimately, Mars (who is nearly a decade older than his bandmates) found that his health issues made it impossible to continue with the band, and he announced his retirement on October 26, 2022.

In 1989, "Dr. Feelgood" became the band's first Top 10 hit, reaching No.6. In 1990, "Without You" climbed the charts to reach No.8. Both of these singles came from the band's best-selling and highest charting album, "Dr. Feelgood" (1989).

When the band was first formed, Nikki Sixx suggested the name "Christmas," which the other members did not care for. Mick Mars recalled a previous band of his, White Horse, being referred to as "a motley looking crew." Vince Neil suggested adding the umlauts to the stylistic spelling, inspired by the beer they were drinking at the time: Löwenbräu.

Though not the first cover song they recorded (a version of the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" [1968] appears on "Shout at the Devil" [1983]), Mötley Crüe had their first Top 20 hit with a remake of "Smokin' in the Boys Room" (1973), the biggest hit of Brownsville Station's career.
