Movie Scores

Although he won five Oscars for his other film work, John Barry is perhaps best known for his scores for the "James Bond" franchise. His first was "From Russia with Love" (1963); his last, "The Living Daylights" (1987).

Legendary composer Max Steiner picked apart the song "As Time Goes By" to haunting effect as he incorporated it throughout his score for the 1942 classic "Casablanca."

Director Sam Peckinpah had never heard of Bob Dylan, but hired him to write the score based on a recommendation from star and fellow singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson. Dylan also appears in the film as a member of Billy the Kid's gang.

Bob Dylan composed one of his most well-known and highest-charting songs, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (1973), as part of the score.

The TV series that inspired the "Star Trek" films used different composers throughout its run. Ditto for the "Star Trek" films, with music by Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Leonard Rosenman and Cliff Eidelman, among others, but NOT John Williams.

In the history of the Academy Awards, only three women have won Oscars for their film scores. And it took a split of the category (into Dramatic Score and Musical or Comedy Score) in the late 1990s to make that happen. Rachel Portman's award for 1996's "Emma" made her the first, with Anne Dudley winning the following year for "The Full Monty" (1997).
