National Tequila Day

Much like how champagne must be from the Champagne region of France, Tequila must originate from the tequila valley of Mexico.

However, this definition has been loosened in recent years to include more places, it is still a product with a designation of origin in Mexico.

Jimmy Buffett not only wrote the tribute to the frozen drink, "Margaritaville", in 1977, he also turned it into a multi-billion dollar empire.

He not only opened a chain of Margaritaville restaurants, but also a series of international hotels, resorts, and a cruise line bearing the brand.

Agave plants feature sword-like, sap producing leaves that stick up from a large plant heart under the ground.

The heart of the plant is then taken, processed, and distilled to create tequila.

The famous dance to "Tequila" by The Champs was performed by Pee-Wee Herman, a long-time character portrayed by comedian Paul Reubens. It appears in the 1985 film "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," where Pee-Wee impresses a biker gang with his unique and quirky moves. The dance has since become an iconic piece of pop culture history.

Urban legend often mistakenly believes a worm, specifically the larvae of the Agave moth, is floating in the bottom of tequila bottles.

There have however been worms in liquor bottles, but it is mezcal not tequila. This custom has largely ceased as it was mostly for tourists and promotion of the drink.
