NHL Original Six

In addition to scoring fifty goals in fifty games during the 1944-1945 season, Maurice Richard was also the first NHL player to score 500 career goals. He retired in 1960 as the league's all-time scoring leader.

The first twenty-nine winners of the Conn Smythe trophy were all Canadian. In bringing the New York Rangers their first Stanley Cup championship since 1940, defenseman Brian Leetch (considered one of the greatest American-born players ever) was the first American to win the coveted Conn Smythe Trophy.

Neither Dave Hanson nor Steve Carlson had much of a career in the NHL. After being drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in 1975, both were out of the league within five years. However, the pair achieved cult status with their performances (along with Steve's brother Jeff) as the Hanson brothers in the 1977 comedy "Slap Shot."

In 1939, Pat McReavy played in six games with the Boston Bruins, but not in the playoffs, yet the team put his name on the Stanley Cup anyway. Two years later, McReavy scored the only two goals of his Bruins career during the playoffs and again got his name on the Stanley Cup. This time, however, his name was misspelled as Pat McCreavy.

When a replica Stanley Cup was produced in 1957, the engraver kept the misspelling as a tribute to McReavy.

While they still have the second most Stanley Cup wins of any NHL team, with thirteen, the Toronto Maple Leafs have not won the Cup since 1967, the last year of the Original Six era.
