Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is known as the world's largest celebration of beer. It attracts millions of visitors from across the globe eager to participate in the festivities. Originating in 1810 as a wedding celebration for Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig, it has since evolved into an annual event famous for its hearty German beer, traditional Bavarian foods, vibrant parades, lively music, and a general atmosphere of camaraderie.

The liter-sized beer drinking mug is known as a "Stein". In German it's called a "Maßkrug" (or “Maß” for short).

Traditionally, steins have a hinged lid with a thumb lever to help prevent objects or insects from falling into the beer. The concept of the covered stein dates back to when concerns about the bubonic plague made closed containers more sanitary.

Oktoberfest actually starts in late September and runs for 2-3 weeks. The beer brewed for Oktoberfest is 6% ABV (alcohol by volume) which is stronger than regular beer. And visitors must only be 16 years of age to drink beer, and 18 years of age to drink spirits.

However, in addition to beer, wine and spirits are also served. There is no restriction to only beer being served.

Oktoberfest takes place in the city of Munich located in the state of Bavaria, Germany.

 In 2023, attendance reached a record 7.2 million visitors, who consumed approximately 7.4 million liters of beer!

In Germany, when you're about to enjoy a drink of beer with friends, you say "Prost!" to toast before clinking glasses. This word relates to the Latin "prosit", roughly translating to "may it benefit!"
