Oscar Snubs and Losses

With eight nominations and zero wins, Glenn Close has tied the legendary Peter O'Toole for most Oscar losses in the acting categories.

Although the victory of Paul Haggis' "Crash" (2005) over "Brokeback Mountain" is often cited as one Oscar's biggest mistakes, it did give Haggis the unusual distinction of being the only person to write two consecutive Best Picture winners, having also written the previous year's winner, "Million Dollar Baby" (2004).

Both "The Turning Point" (1977) and "The Color Purple" (1985) were nominated for eleven Academy Awards, and both came away from the ceremony empty-handed.

Following his tragic death in August 2020, Chadwick Boseman was the odds on favorite to win Best Actor for his role in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" (2020), and producers moved the award to the final spot of the night, traditionally occupied by Best Picture.

Instead, the Academy presented the Best Actor Oscar to Anthony Hopkins, his second, and, at age 83, he became the oldest winner of an acting Oscar. 

"Gandhi" (1982) is now seen as an old-fashioned, generic biopic, one that focuses entirely on the character's goodness and great achievements, rather than painting a complete picture of the man.

"E.T the Extra-Terrestrial" (1982) was the highest grossing film of all time for ten years before losing that mantle to "Jurassic Park" (1993), also directed by Steven Spielberg.
