Packed School Lunch

The idea of giving an apple to a teacher comes from early days of school houses when teachers were cared for by communities in the rural western United States. It was then popularized later by the 1939 Bing Crosby song "An Apple for the Teacher," which turned it into the enduring symbol it is today.

FUN FACT

Baby carrots are not grown that way, they are regular size carrots that are cut down and then buffed in a tumbler. They were created in the 1980s by farmer Mike Yurosek of California to cut down on food waste from misshapen carrots that people would not buy.

While "Choosy Mom's Choose Jif" was the advertising slogan for the brand for nearly 50 years, in the 2010s they changed it to "That Jif'ing Good" so as not to alienate fathers who might make lunch for little ones.

The pinwheel sandwich is a collection of meats, cheeses, and sauce wrapped in a tortilla and cut into sections. It came to prominence in the early 20th century as an offering in British tea rooms, but quickly spread to children's lunchboxes.
