Poison, Toxins, and Venom

In the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Snow White," the princess falls into a deep coma after biting into a poisoned apple given to her by her wicked stepmother, the Queen, who is disguised as an old peddler woman. 

Some species of mushrooms, known as "magic mushrooms" or "psilocybin mushrooms," contain the compound psilocybin. This naturally occurring psychedelic compound has hallucinogenic properties. Throughout history, different cultures around the world have used these mushrooms for spiritual and recreational purposes. 

Activated to deter predators, the scaly "rattle" at the end of the rattlesnake's tail gives the slithery reptile its name. There are 36 known species of rattlesnakes with 65 to 70 subspecies.

Botulinum toxin is derived from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, which is highly potent, and just a small amount can cause paralysis. This makes it one of the most dangerous, but also useful substances in medicine and cosmetics when controlled precisely.

Prussic acid is commonly known as hydrogen cyanide. The hard pit in the center of cherries contains amygdalin, a compound that can release cyanide when metabolized. 

While ingesting a whole cherry pit often isn't dangerous due to its hard coating which mitigates absorption in the body, crushing or chewing big quantities can pose a health risk.
