Popes, Pontiffs, & the Papacy

The term "pope" traces its origins back to the Greek word "pappas" and the Latin "papa," both of which mean "father". Traditionally, it was a term of respect used for bishops during the early days of Christianity. Over time, however, its use became more specific, referring particularly to the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church, thereby embodying the central paternal role in a spiritual sense similar to a familial father in a spiritual sense.

In the Roman Catholic Church, the pope holds various titles that reflect his responsibilities and significance, including Bishop of Rome, since he is the bishop of the city of Rome. The term Supreme Pontiff highlights his role as the highest authority in the Church, deriving from the Latin term Pontifex Maximus.The title Primate of Italy also designates the pope as the primary bishop of Italy. 

However, Papal Prince is not a title used to refer to the pope.

Pope Francis was head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from March 13th, 2013 until his death in April 2025. He was the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas and from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first born or raised outside of Europe since the 8th-century Syrian pope Gregory III.

Vatican City, an independent city-state enclaved within Rome, is the world's smallest country by both area and population. It covers roughly 44 hectares (110 acres) and has a population of about 800 people, most of whom are Catholic clergy. 

It has its own governance, currency, and postal system. The country's spiritual and cultural riches, alongside landmark sites like St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums, attract millions of tourists each year.

For centuries, though not required, the newly elected pope has typically been a cardinal. Originating from an early church tradition, cardinals are senior ecclesiastical leaders in the Catholic Church, acting as key advisers to the pope. Historically, becoming pope often involved being a church member in good standing who is highly respected within the College of Cardinals; however, any baptized male can technically be chosen.
