In "Squid Game" (2021), if a player fails to pass the current game, they are eliminated from the competition in the most final way possible - they are killed. 

The show's success is partly due to its commentary on economic inequality and the desperation faced by many in real life.

"Squid Game" (2021) hails from South Korea and became the first Korean drama to top Netflix's top ten weekly most-watched TV show charts globally reaching number one in 94 countries.

The show was created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, who conceived the idea in 2008 while struggling with his own debt. Dong-hyuk tried unsuccessfully for years to get the script produced before Netflix purchased it.

In "Squid Game" (2021), commonly known children's games like Marbles, Red Light, Green Light and Tug of War become life-or-death decisions invoking both nostalgia and horror.

In  "Squid Game" (2021), main character Seong Gi-hun suffers from a gambling addiction. 

Gi-hun becoming a participant in a mysterious survival game with a massive cash prize becomes a way for him to pay off his creditors and earn a fresh start.

FUN FACT

South Korean dalgona, a honeycomb toffee candy, gained international fame due to exposure from "Squid Game" (2021). 

In the show, players must delicately carve out shapes from the brittle candy. The shapes include a star, an umbrella, a circle, and a star. They did not include a heart.
