Technical Oscar Awards

All three of these cinematographers hail from Mexico.

FUN FACT

Emmanuel Lubezki won his first Oscar for "Gravity" (2013), directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who would go on to serve as his own cinematographer, and win an Oscar, for "Roma" (2018).

While special presentations may have been made earlier, the first of these to become an official Academy Awards category was Best Film Editing, which debuted at the 1935 ceremony.

Academy Awards for Best Art Direction (initially honoring the Art Department, then the Art Director and Set Decorator) were presented from the first Oscars in 1929 through the 84th Oscars in 2012. For the 2013 ceremony, the category name was changed to Best Production Design.

Prior to the 1980s, two Special Achievement awards were presented for makeup: William J. Tuttle won for "7 Faces of Dr. Lao" (1964) and John Chambers won for "Planet of the Apes" (1968).

The Academy refused to present such an award to the makeup team of 1980's "The Elephant Man," but the onslaught of protests and complaints led directly to the creation of the Best Makeup award the following year. 

Awards for Best Sound Effects were presented from 1964 to 1968, an award for Best Title Writing was presented once, at the first Oscars ceremony in 1929, and three people took home trophies for Best Dance Direction between 1936 and 1938.

While it was proposed by the Academy's Board of Governors every year from 1991 to 2012, a category for Best Stunt Coordination has yet to be implemented.
