The St. Louis Cardinals

In 1953, Cardinals owner Fred Saigh was indicted on federal charges of income tax evasion. Under pressure from Commissioner Ford Frick, Saigh moved to sell the team. Although he was initially going to sell to a group of businessmen in Houston, at the last minute, St. Louis brewing company Anheuser-Busch made Saigh an offer.

Though their figure was less than what the Houston group had offered, the brewer appealed to Saigh's civic pride and ensured that the team would stay in St. Louis.

During the 1930s, St. Louis Cardinals players were said to go on the field in unwashed, dirty, and smelly uniforms. The term "Gashouse Gang" was a reference to factories that turned coal into gas for lighting and cooking, known throughout the city for their foul smell.

Though all four of these players showed defensive wizardry and won multiple Gold Gloves during their time with the St. Louis Cardinals, there is only one true Wizard: Ozzie Smith, who won thirteen consecutive Gold Gloves between 1980 and 1992.

Greg Maddux, who holds the all-time record for Gold Gloves with eighteen, also won thirteen in a row from 1990 through 2002.

Tony La Russa managed the St. Louis Cardinals for sixteen seasons, from 1996 to 2011. During that span, La Russa accumulated 1,408 regular season victories, the most of any Cardinals manager. He led the team to two World Series victories (2006 and 2011) and was named Manager of the Year in 2002.

"El Hombre" translates from Spanish as "The Man." Out of respect for St. Louis Cardinals legend Stan Musial, who was known as "Stan the Man," Pujols asked he not to be referred to with that nickname.
