The rider with the lowest cumulative time following each of the twenty-one stages of the Tour de France wears a yellow jersey for the next stage. According to the official history of the Tour de France, the first yellow jersey was introduced in 1919.

The penny-farthing, first introduced in the 1870s, was the first machine to be called a bicycle. The name refers to the British penny and farthing coins, with the penny being the larger of the two. Penny-farthings popularity was short lived with the development of chain-driven bicycles in the late 1880s.

German industrialist Gottlieb Daimler invented the high-speed, petroleum fueled combustion engine in the early 1880s and created the Reitwagen, German for "riding car," in 1885. Skeptics have pointed out that Daimler's invention isn't actually a motorcycle, as it contains more than two wheels. 

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is held annually the first week of August in Sturgis, South Dakota. In 2015, Sturgis reported an attendance of over 700,000, the highest number of riders in the nearly 100 year history of the event.

Queen released the double A side single "Bicycle Race" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" in October 1978. Each song features reciprocating lyrical references, with "Bicycle Race" saying "fat bottomed girls, they'll be riding today" and "Fat Bottomed Girls" proclaiming "Get on your bikes and ride!"
