The Sony Walkman was released in 1979 and quickly became a hit, selling 30,000 units in its first month when 5,000 was projected.

It revolutionized music and helped usher in the era of the cassette tape that exploded in popularity thanks to its cheap manufacturing cost and small shipping footprint.
